EPITAPH FÜR M.

EPITAPH FOR M.

This is Brecht's succinct summation of living under a bureaucratic system. The abbreviation ”M” is for Russian avant-garde poet and writer Vladimir Mayakovsky.

The book’s centerpiece has the poem written in “Sütterlin”, a late development of an old German handwriting called “Kurrent”, which originally evolved alongside the Textur and Fraktur letters (Black Letters) in the 15th century.
Commissioned in 1911 by the Prussian Ministry of Science, Art, and Culture, it was designed by Ludwig Sütterlin. It quickly became the favorite handwriting script in Germany but was banned by the Nazis in 1941 in favor of a Latin writing style. It was, however, still taught in schools until the 1970s. Brecht used it to pen his letters, plays, and poetry.
