Driven by Pablo Neruda's long "Ode to Typography" the result is a strongly vertical medium folio size case-bound book, measuring 18.5 x 5.25 x 0.5 inches (cm), when closed. The poem is printed letterpress in Garamond type on 8 pages of water-marked French BFK paper. There is a gate-fold of an original 5-color reduction, chine collè woodcut of Pablo Neruda, printed on Italian Magnani paper. Due to that the book can be displayed standing up. It measures 18.5 x 5 x 0.5 inches (47 x 18 x 1.25 cm) closed and 18.5 x 10 x 4 inches (47 x 15.5 x 10 cm) when open. The gate-fold shows the last stanza of the ode in Spanish, printed letterpress in varies types.
The print also displays large Bodoni types around the portrait, and when closed, is cradled in paper with hand-embroidered metal gold threads. A colophon is in the back of the book. Bound in Kraft-tex leather with hot-stamped titles. Blue end papers. All hand-inked and hand-printed on a Showcard letterpress. Edition of 15 copies, signed and numbered.
My artist books, broadsides, and loose-leaf editions are published in very small numbers, as low as five. All are hand-printed and hand-bound (in the case of books) by me, all are signed and numbered. While I am trying to be perfect, I am human, not a machine. Some variations in the editioned work are to be expected due to the processes, materials, and the artist’s change of mind. It is exactly what makes the work collectible: each piece is an original work of art. The pieces employ printmaking like original etchings, woodcuts, carborundum, screen prints, monotype, monoprint, and letterpress. Nothing is produced using digital reproduction methods.
